Empalme is a combination of hardware and software for managing and monitoring the distribution of electrical power in IT, Broadcasting and Telecom environments in general, and in datacenters in particular. It was developed for Thor Systems, manufacturer of highly reliable rack Power Distribution Units with a unique feature set.
Empalme consists of hypermodular physical devices, working together in a sophisticated system to provide total insight into the infrastructure. Whether this is just one room, one datacenter, or 100 locations around the globe. As part of this complete solution, several components were developed:
- An Empalme Hub.
The Empalme hub is the heart of the Empalme system. This central entity collects historical data, routes events according to event rules and is the link to the second layer, an IP network. On the IP network, a virtually unlimited amount of Empalme Hubs can then be managed by the Empalme Management Console (a PC application). One instance of the EMC can connect to many hubs, and one hub can be connected to many EMC instances. - Two horizontal and one vertical Power Distribution Unit for 19-inch racks.
The EL2 for example is a twelve outlet PDU in a single rack unit form factor (1U), capable of providing a maximum of 8 Amps through an outlet with a total maximum of 16 Amps per PDU. The outlets are indifidually fused, metered and switched. - GPIO interfaces for integration with external systems.
GPI signals in combination with the powerfull rule based event system can be used to switch selectable groups of outlets on or off. This could be applied in control rooms to switch complete desks or led walls on and off.
On the other end, events in the Empalme system, such as power outage, can control GPO signals wired to for example signal lights, buzzers or HVAC systems.
